Magento tutorial: How to install a Magento extension

Posted 3 years ago

Magento is a highly effective and robust platform for creating your eCommerce store. With Magento, you can build your business, increase online traffic, scalability and most importantly, increase sales. You can get all the essentials with Magento, but to truly make the platform your own, there is a vast selection of extensions to choose from that allow you to customise the website.

Today, our Magento developer has put together a tutorial to show you how to install a Magento extension with just a few quick and easy tips. In this example, we are installing a banner slider on a 2.4.x version of Magento. Keep reading to find out how to install this handy extension!

Step 1

To start this tutorial, we are downloading the free banner slider extension from Weltpixel.com. This website features a range of Magento themes and extensions which can help to enhance your Magento store. There are a variety of free and paid extensions on this platform, so take a look at which ones you would like to install.

Another great platform for Magento extensions is Amasty.com.

Step 2

Once you have downloaded your extension, you will need to upload the file using FTP to the app/code directory of your Magento store.

Step 3

After completing step 2, you will then need to run a series of commands to upgrade, deploy and flush any cache on your website. This helps to alert the platform that there is new data and information to be displayed. Below are the commands needed for this step:

php bin/magento setup:upgrade
php bin/magento setup:static-content:deploy –f en_US en_GB
php bin/magento cache:flush

To run these commands, we have used Putty.

Step 4

Now that you have run the necessary commands, you will need to log back into your Magento admin account (ensuring to refresh the page first). Here, you will see a new section has been added at the bottom of the main menu where your fresh content is stored. Stay tuned for our next tutorial, where we will show you how to configure this extension and add the banner slider to your homepage.
